Noteworthy new routes announced in December 2022 (so far): UK to Vietnam, Glasgow, Porto, Catania and more

Airlines around the globe frequently announce or launch new routes pretty much everyday, it seems. All of which are of note if you’re interested in aviation or simply looking for new destinations to visit on your travels.

If you’re interested in exciting new travel opportunities from the U.K., or looking for international flights to try in future, here’s a selection of new routes announced or launched in December 2022.

New routes coming in 2023

Paris (CDG) to New York (JFK) – Norse Atlantic Airways

A direct daily service between the French capital and U.S. city is set to launch from 29 March 2023 onwards by Norway airline Norse Atlantic – and it’s low cost, too, with one-way fares starting from €219 (around £188). Tickets went on sale on 29 November 2022, which isn’t December, obviously, but close enough…

Jersey (JER) to Amsterdam (AMS) – easyJet

EasyJet is making history with the airline’s first international flight from Jersey Airport to the Dutch capital. The twice-weekly route is set to launch on 1 April 2023, and will operate throughout the summer.

Belfast (BFS) to Rhodes (RHO) – easyJet

A new route is coming to Northern Ireland, with a twice-weekly direct flight from Belfast International Airport to Rhodes – one of Greece’s stunning Dodecanese islands – launching from 3 June 2023, but on sale from 7 December 2022.

Flights will depart on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Along with the new route, U.K. airline easyJet also announced it would be adding an eighth plane, an Airbus A320, to its fleet at Belfast.

Manchester (MAN) to Murcia (MJV) – easyJet

Similarly, easyJet is also launching a new Manchester route to Murcia, a city in the south-east of Spain. Tickets go on sale from 7 December 2022, with flights due to take off on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2 May 2023 onwards.

The low-cost airline is also adding a new Airbus A320 to Manchester’s fleet, the 21st overall.

Honolulu (HNL) to Cook Islands (RAR) – Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines is due to launch a weekly route from city Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye Airport to Rarotonga, the capital of the Cook Islands, with an inaugural flight on 23 May 2023, on sale from 7 December 2022.

The flight will operate on the Airbus A321neo and is one of many Pacific connections Hawaiian offers – with the new route set to boost connections between the U.S. and the South Pacific island nation.

Edinburgh (EDI) to Catania (CTA) – easyJet

Anyone in Edinburgh hoping to reach Sicily directly is in luck from 2 June 2023, when easyJet launches a twice-weekly, summer route to the city of Catania, flying Mondays and Fridays. On sale now.

Newcastle (NCl) to Athens (ATH) – Aegean

Flights are on sale now for Greece’s flag carrier Aegean‘s new route to the country’s history-packed capital, Athens, from Newcastle International Airport. The route is set to launch on 14 June, operating twice per week on Wednesdays and Sundays until 17 September.

Glasgow (GLA) to Porto (OPO) – easyJet

If you live near Glasgow Airport, you’ll soon be able to hop on a new easyJet route to the Portuguese city break destination Porto – which, as far as we can tell, is the first direct flight between the two cities.

Flights start from 31 March 2023, and will run twice per week on Mondays and Fridays throughout the summer.

Liverpool (LPL) to Corfu (CFU) – Ryanair

A new route from Liverpool John Lennon Airport will land on the Greek island of Corfu from 4 June 2023, with seats on sale from December 7 2022. It’s a weekly route, operating throughout summer, and holidaymakers can expect the departure to take place on Sundays.

Bristol (BRS) to Bydgoszcz (BZG), Marseille (MRS), Porto (OPO) and Venice (VCE) – Ryanair

Four new routes from Bristol Airport were announced by Ryanair on 8 December 2022, with flights to Bydgoszcz in Poland, Marseille in France, Porto in Portugal and Venice in Italy available for summer 2023 trips.

Bournemouth (BOH) to Carcassonne (CCF), Edinburgh (EDI) and Venice (VCE) – Ryanair

More Ryanair flights are set to depart Bournemouth in summer 2023, too – with three new routes to Carcassonne in France, Edinburgh and Venice all announced.

Brisbane (BNE) to Tokyo Haneda (HND) – Qantas

Australia’s flag carrier Qantas launched its new route from Brisbane International Airport to Tokyo Haneda Airport on 1 December 2022, providing a connection between Queensland and the Japanese capital three times per week (on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays).

Previously, Qantas flights from Brisbane flew into Narita International Airport (NIA), so the switch provides closer access for passengers to downtown Tokyo . A Melbourne route to Haneda is also expected to launch in March 2023.

Vancouver (YVR) to Bangkok (BKK) – Air Canada

Air Canada launched North America’s first non-stop flight to Thailand on 1 December 2022 – flying from Vancouver International Airport to the capital, Bangkok. The flight time was 15 hours, 55 minutes, and covered 12,000km in distance.

Stopovers on the way from North America to Bangkok could include Japan or Hong Kong.

Newcastle (NCL) to Dubai (DXB) – Emirates

Not exactly a new route, but on 1 December 2022, UAE carrier Emirates resumed its daily, lunchtime service from Newcastle International Airport to winter sun spot Dubai, which had previously been reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Melbourne (MEl) to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Qantas

Australia’s flag carrier also big news for those who travel from Melbourne, as it launched its first-ever direct flight from the city to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas, U.S., on 2 December 2022.

The route operates four times per week, and the flight takes a whopping 17 hours, meaning it’s up there with some of the world’s longest flights…

London Gatwick (LGW) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) – Bamboo Airways

A new direct, weekly route to Vietnam is coming to London, with Bamboo Airways launching a route from Gatwick to Ho Chi Minh City on 7 December 2022. Previously, the Vietnamese airline launched a direct flight to Hanoi from Gatwick on 30 October 2022.
